Design Style Guide

Star Wars Fanmade

Sound on! There is a video at the end.

About the project

On the official Unreal Engine discord I found this volunteer project where they were looking for a UX/UI to join their multidisciplinary team.

The game was a fanmade non-profit project by a team of professional volunteers in their free time, based on Star Wars Jedi Outcast.

Challenges & Goals

  • Working remotely with others around the world

  • Creating an initial design style guide for other designers to follow

  • Implementing some of the components in Unreal Engine 5

  • Getting inspired by the general aesthetics of Star Wars by proposing something different

Tools Used

Ideas & Inspiration

"Depth, contrast, negative, perspective, symmetry, directional cues and repetition all make up that classic Star Wars look."

The project's brief was to be inspired by the original game but mainly by the latest Star Wars titles, such as Battlefront or Fallen Order.

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Star Wars Fallen Order

Star Wars Battlefront II

Logo

They named it "Kyber Initiative" and I felt that a logo and visual identity were needed since the project didn't have any of these (most people were developers or 3d modelers).

  • Completely inspired by the aesthetics of Star Wars logos

  • Geoathenia font modified

initial elements

  • I proposed a color palette for the UI as well as typography and different styles for the texts.

Basic Components

  • I designed several basic components that were already being used in the project but did not have any style

  • The team asked me to focus on the HUD components but I saw the need to add other components such as buttons, sliders, tab buttons, etc. which were eventually used in other parts of the game like menus.

some screens

  • These are some of the ideas I put together for the menu, options and some messages. The team shared the illustration with me.

  • This was created as the team needed it in the game.

Unreal Engine Implementation

From the beginning they shared the project with me remotely and encouraged me to start implementing some components. Here's a preview from UE5:

Outcome

It is one of the closest experiences of working with a complete video game development team, it was quite enriching.

After a break of about 3 months, this August 2024 I am collaborating again with the team to continue designing the UI of this project.
